Breast Lifts

“Ptosis” of the breasts, also known as breast droop, and “deflation” of the breasts can occur after pregnancy, after significant weight loss or with age. A mastopexy reshapes the breast by rearranging the breast tissue, redraping loose breast skin, and lifting the nipples and areolas to a higher and more aesthetic position on the breast.

The goal of “mastopexy” (breast lift) is to create a perkier, lifted, more youthful breast shape. Your mastopexy result should look natural, like you were just born that way! Mastopexy surgery can help to improve a woman’s body image, and in many instances can help “lift” her self-esteem and self-confidence!

A breast lift rejuvenates sagging breasts to an elevated and more aesthetic position, but does not increase the overall breast volume. Sometimes, a breast implant is placed at the same time as mastopexy to achieve a fuller, enhanced breast with more projection in addition to a breast lift.

Good candidates for mastopexy include women who are healthy, in good physical shape, and at their ideal body weight (or a stable weight following major weight loss).

Typical breast lift patients include women who have satisfactory volume but sagging breasts that lack substance or firmness (breast “deflation”), and/or with nipples and areolas pointing downward (breast “ptosis”). Many women with droopy breasts state they are “happy in a bra” and they just wish to have that effect with a breast lift.

Moms may find they miss the shape and fullness of their breasts from the time before they had children, or possibly the fullness of while they were nursing their babies. Other women are seeking better symmetry of their breasts if one is a significantly different size or shape than the other, or if their breasts have a “tubular shape”.

Lasers for Tattoo Removal

The use of lasers to remove tattoos began in the early ’90s with the first report of successful tattoo removal using Q-Switched Ruby lasers. Ruby lasers are still quite useful for tattoo removal however, they must be used carefully in dark skin type individuals since coincident melanin absorption at 694nm can be associated with prolonged but most often temporary loss of pigmentin treatment areas.

In 1991 the Q-Switched Neodymium-YAG laser was introduced for tattoo removal. Theoretically, this laser with a longer wavelength (1064nm) would allow deeper penetration and at the same time exhibit less melanin absorption. Early studies using this laser showed that it was very effective in removing dark blue black ink seen in amateur and professional tattoos and especially useful in removing dark ink from cosmetic eyeliner tattoos. The addition of a frequency doubling crystal to this laser, provided laser output at 532nm or green light, which also aided the removal of tattoos containing red and orange ink.

At the present time the Q-Switch YAG laser is the workhorse of tattoo removal. Unfortunately, certain ink colors, most often, green do not respond to this laser necessitating the use of Ruby or Alexandrite lasers for complete removal. In 1992, a Q-Switched Alexandrite laser was introduced operating at a wavelength of 755nm. The Alexandrite crystal emits energy that is longer than the Ruby at 694nm and significantly shorter than the ND-YAG laser at 1064nm. Excellent results have been obtained in the treatment of blue-black and green tattoos using this laser.

Other uses for tattoo lasers are removal of traumatic tattooing resulting from mechanical penetration of foreign particles into the body. These tattoos are most likely associated with falls or “road rash” and can be easily eliminated by treatment using tattoo removal lasers. In addition, unwanted or misplaced cosmetic tattoos such as eyeliner and lip liner tattoos can be removed by means of Q-Switched lasers. In summary, lasers available at the Center for Laser Surgery provide an excellent means of tattoo removal with little or no scarring. These lasers offer significant advantages over previous methods for tattoo removals and are presently the treatment of choice and standard of care for tattoo removal.

Lifestyle Lift is calling it quits?

Lifestyle Lift, often featured in infomercial-like advertisements claiming to allow consumers to “look as young on the outside as you feel on the inside,” specializes in less-invasive facelift procedures that require only local anesthesia and short recovery periods. With promises to clients it can remove wrinkles, frown lines and sagging skin in just a matter of an hour.  If you were planning to stop by one of the company’s centers on Thursday you are likely met with locked doors and few answers.

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Treatment)

The over development of male breasts, also known as gynecomastia, affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. This condition may be caused by a hormonal imbalance, side effects from drugs, or may occur for no particular reason at all. But despite the cause, the condition is significant and may pose a serious problem in a man’s life. Men with large or sagging breasts can be both physically and emotionally uncomfortable, often restricting themselves from certain activities because they feel self-conscious about their breast size. Male breast reduction is an excellent way to decrease the size of a man’s breast, helping him feel more comfortable and confident.

 Candidate for Male Breast Reduction

A good candidate for male breast reduction surgery is any man who feels uncomfortable with his large breast size. The procedure can be performed on men of all ages who are in good health, both physically and emotionally. The best candidates for male breast reduction surgery have firm, elastic skin that will reshape well to their body’s new contours.

Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Male breast reduction surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The surgery typically takes one to three hours. Several techniques can be utilized in male breast reduction, depending on the extent of the procedure. If the enlarged breasts are primarily caused by excessive fatty tissue, liposuction can be performed through tiny incisions to remove the excess fat. The incision may be made around the edge of the areola (the area around the nipple) or in the underarm. If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of the enlarged breast, the tissue will be excised, or cut out, in addition to liposuction. In more extreme instances when large amounts of fat or glandular tissue have been removed, excess skin may have remained that has not reshaped well to the new contour of the breast. In these cases, the excess skin may have to be removed as well. The incisions are then closed using sutures and are usually covered with a dressing. The chest may be wrapped to keep the skin firmly in place.
