As we age, the cumulative effects of muscle movement and
volume loss in the face cause creases and thinning of the soft tissues. By
injecting dermal fillers into certain areas of the face, a smoother, fuller,
and more youthful appearance can be achieved. “Dermal” refers to the tissue
layer just beneath the skin which is the location where the fillers are
typically injected. No anesthesia is necessary for receiving these facial
fillers, as extremely thin needles are used for injection, and the fillers are mixed
with a local anesthetic.
Fillers such as Juvederm® are derived from hyaluronic acid,
a naturally-occurring substance in the human body, which will absorb water
after it is injected. Typically, small amounts of filler are carefully injected
into creases around the nose and lips. They are also often used as lip fillers
to augment the size and/or plumpness of the lips. Results are apparent
immediately with fillers. Results from Juvederm® may last approximately six
months to a year. Bruising, swelling, and discomfort at the sites of injection
may occur with fillers, thus it is recommended to schedule the injection one
week ahead of an important meeting or event, as side effects typically subside
within this amount of time.
